19. GUNUNG KUBING

Gunung Kubing Geopark Site, situated within the Sharp Formation, is renowned for its unique sedimentary rocks, including quartz sandstone and mudstone. Situated in Perpat Village, part of Membalong District, these rocks feature distinct physical characteristics such as a white-green coloration, density, and fine to coarse grains in parallel-layered formations, with thicknesses ranging from 2 to 40 cm. These formations are consistent with the rock outcrops surrounding the Linsum Kawai geosite, reflecting the area's tectonic history and metamorphic processes.

The metamorphic changes in the Sharp Formation are due to granite intrusions that penetrated previously deposited sedimentary rocks (Kelapa Kampit & Sharp Formation) during the Paleozoic era. The area's predominantly hilly terrain, marked by kerangas forest vegetation, is essential for local habitat preservation and water recharge.

External geological processes, particularly erosion along river flows in Gunung Kubing, have created pits on sedimentary rock surfaces, showcasing the dynamic interplay of natural forces. Batu Lake, a significant feature of the Gunung Kubing geosite, is interpreted by the local community as evidence of past geological activities in the region.
